The Benefits of Buying Local

As a floral designer and flower farmer sometimes I’m asked, “Isn’t it easier to just buy flowers like other florist instead of growing your own?” or I hear the excuse, “Kroger (or insert your favorite grocery store) carries cheaper flowers, I’ll just buy mine there.”

My response is simply:

Yes, but easiest/cheapest is always best! I care about where things come from. Guess I’m a “crunchy mom” in sorts – I care about where my money goes, what industries I support with my spending, and a more natural way of living. I care about the impact I have on this planet and what we leave for the future for my kids and following generations. I care about making a difference and I truly believe in a natural lifestyle. Working with my hands, knowing what’s in my soil, raising my own-grown crops. Raising higher quality blooms within seasonal swings that are better for our environment. That’s why local flowers from our farm are the best decision.

The traditional floral industry, as we know it today, is damaging to both the earth and the workers. The majority of flowers that are sold in grocery stores (available to you, the consumer at retail pricing) and floral wholesalers (available to florists at wholesale pricing) have been grown halfway across the world. Flowers are flown in from overseas in airplanes and then driven across the country using massive amounts of petroleum to be delivered to stores and florists. Most of these flowers have been grown using chemicals so bad they’ve been ban in the U.S. These harsh chemicals can cause serious health concerns. Most flowers are completely covered in chemicals to prevent the transmission of diseases or rotting during transit. The last rose you sniffed was dipped in a fungicidal soup before packed in plastic and cardboard to ship to your grocery store!

High-Quality Blooms That Last Longer

Choose to support a different flower supply chain! When you buy flowers from Pine & Posey, you’re guaranteed freshness that imported flowers simply can’t match. Our flowers are harvested within 18-36 hours of delivery, ensuring longer-lasting beauty and fragrance. Unlike imported blooms, which travel thousands of miles and lose days of bloom life, our flowers stay vibrant and fresh for up to two weeks.

We focus on growing specialty, high-quality blooms that thrive in Indiana’s seasonal climate:

  • Spring: Fancy narcissus, early tulips, (late) double tulips, and gorgeous peonies.

  • Summer: Vibrant zinnias, cheerful sunflowers, sweet-smelling stock, and beautiful lisianthus.

  • Autumn: Stunning dahlias and pretty asters.

Each bouquet reflects the season, providing you with flowers that are not only fresher but also more vibrant and unique.

Seasonal Selection for Unique Arrangements

Locally grown flowers offer an ever-changing variety that reflects the beauty of each season. At Pine & Posey, we embrace this diversity by offering seasonal bouquets that feature an array of blooms throughout the year.

Our Monthly Joy Club is a perfect way to experience this seasonal magic. Each month from April through September, Club members receive a fresh bouquet filled with the best blooms of the season. Imagine enjoying:

  • April: Fancy narcissus and early tulips

  • May: Large double tulips bursting with color

  • June: Fragrant peonies and stock

  • July: Bright zinnias and snapdragons

  • August: Sunflowers paired with rose-like lisianthus

  • September: Beautiful dahlias and autumn asters

With such variety, you’ll never get the same bouquet twice! Need 10 more reasons why you need to join our Club? - read them here.

Better for the Environment

Imported flowers have a hidden cost. Around 80% of flowers sold in the U.S. are shipped from countries like Colombia and Ecuador, often drenched in chemicals banned in the U.S. and transported thousands of miles using carbon-heavy shipping methods. According to environmental experts, these imports release 360,000 metric tons of CO2 in just three weeks around Valentine’s Day alone.

When you choose Pine & Posey’s locally grown flowers, you’re helping reduce this environmental impact by cutting out overseas transportation and harmful chemicals. We grow our flowers using earth-friendly practices that protect pollinators and preserve local ecosystems. Supporting local flowers means supporting a cleaner, greener planet.

Personalized Service and Customized Bouquets

One of the greatest joys of buying local flowers is the personalized service that comes with it. Whether you’re planning a wedding, hosting an event, or simply gifting a bouquet to a loved one, Pine & Posey will work closely with you to create custom floral arrangements that reflect your style, budget, and vision.

We grow the flowers ourselves, which means we know exactly what’s in bloom and how to pair colors, textures, and shapes to create the perfect arrangement. And if we don’t grow it on our farm, we will source it in to make your vision come to life. This hands-on approach ensures that each bouquet is not just beautiful but also thoughtfully curated with care and attention to detail.

Supporting Small Businesses in Your Community

When you choose Pine & Posey, you’re investing in more than just beautiful flowers—you’re supporting a family-owned farm and helping to sustain the local economy. Buying from local growers means your money stays in the community, helping to create jobs, fund local initiatives, and protect farmland from development.
